The Te X Live updates for the previous years are no longer available. Te XLive 2011, you can update its packages roughly until Te XLive 2012 is created.

Extract all the texmf files, run the usual TL tools to make it work and split it up into packages (no commands are required on install as the files have already been generated in the packages).

This revolves around using the big release to provide the full 2.3GB texmf sources, which is once a year.

You can delete non-existent map entries using the option --syncwithtrees. It will search your entire filesystem for a filename but there are other programs that do the same. (You can update individual packages manually via CTAN, of course.) The major binary updates of Te X Live (which come out yearly) must be installed as if you were installing a fresh distribution.

Since each version is installed in a folder named by its year, it's possible to have multiple distributions on the same system.

But it's true that stability is a big concern but I'm afraid that the only thing one can really do is to update as often as feasible... We also need time to investigate stronger testing practices before considering taking on a custom Te XLive in Solus, as one of the reasons the Te XLive releases are only about every six months is to give them enough time to do all the testing. I also read from some forums that the 2017 texlive solved the issue with perl.
