Updating links

It will also not refresh the external data that is being updated and saved in the data workbook as long as the read only data workbook is open. If someone is in the data entry workbook, when the analysis workbook tries to refresh the external data it opens a read only copy of the data workbook and makes it your active workbook. Hi Burke, I use this macro a lot and it's a very simple but useful macro to update links: Sub Update Links() This Workbook. Link Sources End Sub I assigned it to a button and press it whenever I need to update external links.

It will also not refresh the external data that is being updated and saved in the data workbook as long as the read only data workbook is open.

I can update the links manually by clicking edit\links\update now.

Is there a way to get the linked cells in the analysis spreadsheet to read the newly updated and saved information from the data spreadsheet automatically?

This works fine initially - if I change the Excel it either refreshes the Power Point automatically or as soon as I click update link.

The first problem arises when I have to save either Excel file and/or Powerpoint file as different version following signifcant changes.

If the links are intentional, then you probably do want them to update - and this message should be able to be bypassed by the way in which you open the workbook.

If the message is about updating external data sources (there was mention of Oracle in the macro, so I guess you have an external data source), then changing the properties of the data block might stop the message.

I go into Data\Get External Data\New Database Query From the Databases tab, I select Excel Files. I then select which sheet I want to pull the data from.

Then I bring across the columns where the data is located in the source.

However I have found that Power Point does not update the link to new Excel file, even if Power Point is open whilst I am saving the new Excel file from say v1 to v2. I have Power Point v1 file and Excel v1 files open, with Power Point linking to v1 Excel file.
